VMA Host Russell Brand Picks Beyonce Over Lady Gaga

Russell Brand stopped by "The View" on Thursday (September 10), and while he spent a lot of time trying to woo co-host Sherri Shepherd, he did manage to speak a bit about what viewers can expect when he hosts the 2009 VMAs on Sunday.

Last year, Brand was a virtually unknown comedian Stateside when he hosted the VMAs in Los Angeles. But the "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" co-star made a name for himself, and a few enemies, after taking swipes at everyone from the Jonas Brothers to President Bush and accidentally cutting off "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson mid-sentence.

"I didn't realize there'd be quite so many death threats," he told the "View" ladies about the response he received last year. "But fortunately, there were an equal number of life threats, so it balanced itself out."

As for his comments about the Jonas Brothers' purity rings during the show, he said that he didn't intend to make fun of their religious beliefs. "I was only joking about that. They're very sweet young men," he said. "I would never mock anyone for their beliefs. Believe what you want to believe."

The ladies also managed to find out whether Brand is rooting for Lady Gaga or Beyoncé, who both have nine nominations this year. "It's such a shame we can't have both," he said. "But I think Beyoncé, probably. I don't know."
